Frequently Asked Questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?+
The IELTS overall band score is the average of your four module scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking ÷ 4), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, an average of 6.625 rounds up to 6.5, while 6.875 rounds up to 7.0.
What is a good IELTS band score?+
Band 6.0 is the minimum for most undergraduate university courses in English-speaking countries. Band 6.5–7.0 is required for most postgraduate programmes. Band 7.0+ is required for UK skilled worker visas, Australian skilled migration, and most healthcare professional registrations.
Can I have different band scores for different modules?+
Yes. It is very common to score differently across modules. Many students score higher in Reading and Listening than in Writing and Speaking because the productive skills are harder to develop quickly. Targeted practice of your weaker modules is the most efficient way to raise your overall score.
Is Band 7 hard to achieve?+
Band 7.0 requires a high level of English proficiency across all four skills. For Writing and Speaking, it requires clear, well-organised responses with a good range of vocabulary and grammar. Regular AI-evaluated practice over 4–8 weeks is typically sufficient to move from Band 6.0 to Band 7.0 for motivated learners.
How many times can I retake the IELTS test?+
There is no limit to how many times you can take IELTS. You can sit the test as often as needed, and most institutions accept your best score. Using your practice sessions to identify exactly which criteria are holding your score down is the key to improving efficiently.
